We’re excited to share that Darren Randle, Founder of Houston Tents & Events, was recently featured as a guest on American Tent’s “How I Rent It” podcast. In Episode 6, host Tony Ehrbar sits down with Darren to explore his remarkable journey from corporate marketing to building one of Houston’s most trusted tent rental companies.
The conversation reveals an inspiring story of resilience, innovation, and the power of pivoting during unprecedented times — including how a chance encounter at a Chick-fil-A drive-through helped save his business during the early days of COVID-19.
From Sports to Tents: An Unexpected Journey
Darren’s path to the tent rental industry wasn’t traditional. With over 11 years in the business and six years running Houston Tents & Events, Darren’s background spans college athletics, corporate marketing with the Houston Texans, and Fortune 50 sponsorship management at Comcast.
“I realized I didn’t want my career to hinge on an 18-year-old catching a ball,” Darren explained about his transition away from sports. His experience as a customer across multiple industries gave him unique insights into what was missing in the tent rental space.
The Ultimate Test: Starting a Business in 2020
Perhaps no story better illustrates entrepreneurial resilience than Houston Tents & Events’ origin story. Darren officially launched the company on January 1, 2020—just 10 weeks before the pandemic changed everything.
“I was killing it for 10 weeks,” Darren recalls. Then came the call that the Houston Rodeo was cancelled, and suddenly the world turned upside down.
The Chick-fil-A Pivot That Saved Everything
What happened next is now legendary in the tent rental industry. During a gloomy, rainy day after receiving the devastating rodeo news, Darren stopped at a busy Chick-fil-A location. Frustrated by getting rained on while ordering, he asked to speak with a manager.
“If you can find somebody inside that can make a decision, I can make sure that you never get rained on again,” he told them.
That conversation led to installing structure tents over the drive-through, which not only covered his mortgage and vehicle payments but eventually expanded to 29 Chick-fil-A locations. The success was so notable that Darren began helping other tent rental companies across the country secure similar opportunities.
Operational Excellence and Growth Strategy
What sets Houston Tents & Events apart is our commitment to operational efficiency and professional service. As an ISO 901 certified facility—reportedly the only tent company in Texas with this certification—we’ve invested heavily in systems that maximize efficiency.
Key Operational Insights:
- Equipment Investment: Darren emphasizes investing in operational improvements like their tent washing and drying system from Tikico, capable of processing 17,000 square feet in 24 hours
- Financing Strategy: “Take somebody else’s money and find a way to make it make money”—Darren advocates for strategic use of financing to grow rather than limiting growth to cash flow
- Professional Standards: Moving the industry away from the “good old boy” mentality toward skilled, certified professionals
Expanding Beyond Houston
While maintaining their Houston headquarters with 50 employees, Houston Tents & Events has strategically expanded across Texas and taken on projects like Super Bowl hospitality in New Orleans. Darren’s philosophy focuses on quality over quantity—building strong partnerships rather than opening multiple struggling locations.
“I love Houston. H-town is where I’ll always be,” Darren says, while acknowledging that other Texas markets like Dallas and Austin often value premium service and are willing to pay for it.
Industry Leadership and Community
What emerges clearly from the conversation is Darren’s commitment to elevating the entire tent rental industry. From sharing Chick-fil-A opportunities with competitors during COVID to his involvement with industry organizations, he exemplifies the collaborative spirit that makes this industry unique.
“There’s a support system and there’s some really good people that are willing to help in this industry,” Darren emphasizes. This philosophy extends to their upcoming donation of a complete wedding rental package for a couple facing health challenges—what Darren expects will become his most memorable project.
