When Houston Tents & Events launched on January 1, 2020, no one could have predicted what would happen just a few months later.
In a recent appearance on The Arcus Arena podcast, Founder and CEO Darren Randle sat down with hosts Candus Hinderer and Carrie Ferroukhi to talk about the company’s journey from startup to one of Texas’ fastest-growing event infrastructure providers. The conversation covered entrepreneurship, leadership, customer service, acquisitions, company culture, and the lessons learned from building a business during one of the most challenging periods in modern history.
A Simple Mission: Build the Company He Wished Existed
Before launching Houston Tents & Events, Darren built a career in college athletics, professional sports, and corporate marketing with organizations including the University of Houston, the Houston Texans, and Comcast. Throughout that career, he frequently worked with event rental vendors and noticed the same problem over and over again.
“The orders were wrong, customer service was lacking, and no
body seemed focused on delivering excellence,” Darren explained.
Rather than accepting the status quo, he saw an opportunity to build something better. That vision became Houston Tents & Events.
Today the company provides far more than tents, tables, and chairs. Its capabilities include temporary power generation, climate control, restroom solutions, staging, catering equipment, and large-scale event infrastructure for corporate events, festivals, sporting events, nonprofits, industrial projects, and emergency response operations across Texas.
The Pandemic Pivot That Changed Everything
Just over two months after HTE launched, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo was canceled as COVID-19 began shutting down the events industry. For a startup event rental company, the timing could not have been worse.
Instead of giving up, Darren looked for new ways to put the company’s equipment to work.
One moment would become a defining chapter in HTE’s story. While waiting in a Chick-fil-A drive-thru during a rainstorm, Darren noticed employees standing outside taking orders without any shelter from the weather. He approached the restaurant’s management with a simple idea: install a canopy structure to protect employees while improving drive-thru operations.
The solution worked. Other Chick-fil-A operators began requesting similar installations, eventually creating opportunities far beyond Houston. What started as a survival strategy became one of the company’s earliest growth catalysts.
“Events are our passion,” Darren said. “But there are so many other opportunities to use our equipment and expertise in ways that help customers solve problems.”
Born in Memphis, Built by Houston
One of the most personal parts of the conversation focused on Darren’s path from a small town outside Memphis, Tennessee, to Houston. After moving to Texas for college, he enrolled at the University of Houston and quickly embraced the city that would eventually become home.
“I was born in Memphis, but built by Houston.”
That connection remains central to the company’s identity. As HTE expands into new markets, Darren has been clear that the Houston Tents & Events name is staying. His goal is not to move away from the company’s roots but to elevate them, building a brand recognized across Texas for quality, professionalism, and execution.
Why Doing the Right Thing Matters
One theme ran through the entire interview more than any other: values.
Darren openly admitted that some of the decisions he makes as a business owner are not always the easiest or most profitable in the short term. But he has never seen that as a problem.
“I’m a bad businessman,” he joked.
The explanation that followed said everything.
“I could make way better business decisions every single day. But it’s going to be at the disadvantage of customers, competitors, the community, or my own family. There’s a lot of bad business things I do every day, but it’s the right thing to do.”
That mindset has shaped HTE’s culture and remains one of the primary reasons the company has earned the trust of customers, partners, and employees across Texas.
Growing Across Texas
Since launching in 2020, Houston Tents & Events has expanded significantly through organic growth and strategic acquisitions, broadening its inventory, services, and geographic reach while continuing to invest in people and infrastructure.
When discussing the future, Darren was direct about what matters most.
“Our goal is to continue growing with good people. Whatever that limit is, I’m content with what we can accomplish together.”
